Where it came from
Fruits Basket -prelude- was produced by TMS Entertainment as a cinematic bridge to the 2019 anime reboot of Natsuki Takaya’s seminal manga series. Released in 2022, the project was designed to adapt the prequel story of Kyoko and Katsuya Honda, providing essential emotional context for the series' central protagonist, Tohru Honda. The film functions as both an epilogue to the television series and a deeply intimate character study, maintaining the distinct visual aesthetic and tonal sensitivity that defined the studio's broader work on the franchise.
The production team, largely carrying over from the 2019 series, aimed to translate Takaya’s signature blend of melodrama and psychological realism into a standalone theatrical format. Directed by Yoshihide Ibata, the movie was crafted to explore the foundational trauma and tender moments that shaped the characters' later lives. Upon its release, it was well-received by the dedicated fan base for its commitment to the source material's emotional depth and its seamless integration into the established narrative arc of the Fruits Basket universe.
