Where it came from
Fruits Version, released in 1985, stands as a notable early entry in the burgeoning Japanese original video animation (OVA) market of the mid-1980s. This period marked a shift in anime distribution, as studios began bypassing traditional television broadcasts to create high-quality, experimental works directly for home video sales, allowing for more niche or avant-garde content that prioritized artistic expression over mass-market accessibility.
The production reflects the aesthetic trends of the mid-80s, leaning into the distinct character design styles that defined the era's independent studio outputs. While the title is relatively obscure, it serves as a piece of cultural history illustrating the rapid experimentation studios undertook as the OVA format matured, aiming to capture a domestic audience eager for unique, self-contained narratives that were not constrained by the episodic requirements of network television.
