Where it came from
Frypan Jiisan, or Frying Pan Old Man, originated as a short film directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori for the Ghibli Museum in 2000. It is based on a children's picture book written by Kenzaburo Oe and illustrated by Yuriko Omura, reflecting the whimsical and gentle storytelling style often found in the museum's exclusive short film library.
The animation focuses on the titular anthropomorphic frying pan, a character defined by his rustic charm and distinct design that prioritizes expressive simplicity over modern aesthetic complexity. The film was created specifically for the Saturn Theater at the Ghibli Museum, where it continues to serve as an example of the studio's commitment to traditional storytelling techniques and niche artistic projects.
