Where it came from
Funassyi no Funafunafuna Biyori was produced by Asahi Production and released in 2015 as a short-form television anime series. It centers on Funassyi, the unofficial, hyperactive mascot of Funabashi City in Chiba Prefecture, who gained widespread fame across Japan for his unscripted, high-energy public appearances. The series translates the mascot's chaotic personality into a structured narrative format, featuring his daily interactions with fellow mascot friends.
The show's design and animation style were crafted to mimic the lighthearted and surreal tone of Funassyi's live-action antics. By shifting the character into an animated medium, the creators aimed to expand the mascot's reach to a younger demographic while maintaining the spontaneity that made the original character a pop culture phenomenon. Upon its debut, the series was received as a playful extension of the mascot craze that defined Japanese regional marketing during the early 2010s.
