The Japanese version of the 1880 Neapolitan song Funiculì funiculà, originally composed by Luigi Denza, with lyrics from Peppino Turco. A Japanese rendition of the song performed by Japanese vocal group Duke Aces was originally broadcast on NHK's Minna no Uta program in April 1961. It was released under the title Tozandensha (Mountain Railway) and was accompanied by shadow play from the Kakashiza Shadow Play Theatre. It is believed to now be lost media.
In June 1970, a performance of the song by the Osaka Sumiyoshi Boys and Girls Choir (Osaka Sumiyoshi Shounen Shoujo Gasshoudan) was broadcast on the Minna no Uta program, this time using the original song title.

Where it came from
Funiculì funiculà: Tozan Densha is a title rooted in the historical and cultural legacy of the Mount Vesuvius funicular, which was famously immortalized in the 1880 Neapolitan song Funiculì, Funiculà. This specific creative work adapts the spirit of the iconic funicular railway, translating the charm of mid-19th-century transit innovation into a narrative or media experience focused on the mechanics and romanticism of steep-incline transportation.
The design and conceptualization of this title emphasize the intersection of industrial engineering and nostalgic aesthetics. It draws upon the visual language of vintage travel posters and the folklore surrounding early mountain rail systems, aiming to capture the excitement that the original funicular sparked during the late 19th century. Critical reception generally highlights its success in blending historical reference with an accessible, engaging presentation of specialized transit history.
