Furusato no Gogatsu

Furusato no Gogatsu, or Hometown May, is a television program produced by NHK, Japan's national public broadcaster. It emerged during a period when NHK sought to reinforce the connection between urban audiences and rural Japanese traditions, focusing on the scenic beauty and cultural practices associated with the month of May in regional provinces. The production team utilized the network's extensive technical resources to capture landscapes and local festivals, aiming to evoke a sense of nostalgia known as furusato—the deep emotional attachment to one's place of origin.

The aesthetic direction of the program reflects NHK's characteristic commitment to high-definition documentary cinematography. By prioritizing wide, tranquil shots of natural environments and the quiet rhythms of local life, the designers sought to create an immersive, meditative experience for the viewer. Upon its release, the program was received as a gentle, educational piece of programming, recognized for its contribution to the cultural preservation of Japan's changing rural landscape and its consistent, polished visual standards.
