Where it came from
Fushigi Dagashiya: Zenitendou originated as a popular children's book series authored by Reiko Hiroshima and illustrated by jyajya, first published in 2013. The story revolves around a mysterious, magical candy shop run by the enigmatic Beniko, who offers visitors enchanted sweets that grant their deepest wishes, provided they consume them correctly. The series gained significant traction in Japan for its blend of whimsical fantasy and moral lessons regarding greed and gratitude, leading to its adaptation into a television anime series by Toei Animation in 2020.
The 2020 anime adaptation maintains the distinctive, charming visual style established by jyajya, utilizing a vibrant color palette to distinguish the magical world of Zenitendou from the mundane lives of its customers. Directed by Satoshi Tomioka, the series focuses on a modular, episodic structure that effectively captures the atmospheric tension of the source material. It was well-received by audiences for its thoughtful pacing and the nostalgic aesthetic of the traditional Japanese dagashiya, or candy shop, serving as a gateway to the broader literary franchise.
