Where it came from
Released in 2006, Futari wa Precure: Splash Star - Maji Doki 3D Theater was a specialized short film produced by Toei Animation as part of an immersive cinematic experience. It was designed specifically for amusement parks and event venues, utilizing early 3D technology to bring the popular magical girl franchise into a tactile, interactive space for young audiences. The production focused on a lighthearted, self-contained adventure that prioritized visual spectacle over the more complex narrative arcs found in the television series.
The aesthetic of the film serves as a direct extension of the character designs created by Akira Inagami for the Splash Star series. The animation team focused on maximizing depth and motion-based effects, which was a deliberate effort to leverage the gimmickry of stereoscopic 3D at the time. While the film was not intended for wide theatrical distribution, it was received as a charming curiosity by the franchise's fanbase, representing Toei's willingness to experiment with the Precure intellectual property in alternative media formats.
