A futon, a traditional Japanese mattress, as seen by Yoriko Mizushiri, becomes the vehicle of dream fantasies combining the most pleasant sensations such as the morning coffee, the warmth of bedding and a soft rice carpet under one’s feet. Lazy stretching serves as a start of sensuous, sleepy gymnastics. With a fluid movement, the passive body will turn once again from the left to the right of the mattress to dive into the fantasies of even deeper unconsciousness a little while later.

Where it came from
The futon, as a Western-style furniture item, evolved from the traditional Japanese shikibuton floor mattress during the 1970s and 1980s. Designed to accommodate the space constraints of urban apartments, William Brouwer is widely credited with creating the first modern wood-frame convertible sofa-bed in 1982. This design aimed to bridge the gap between minimalist Japanese aesthetics and the functional requirements of North American living spaces, eventually becoming a staple of bohemian interior design.
The 1982 film 'Futon' serves as an experimental artifact within the context of independent cinema, utilizing the item as a central metaphorical device. The production grew out of a period of renewed interest in domestic minimalism and the nomadic lifestyle of young professionals. While the film remained an obscure project, its aesthetic choices were intended to reflect the shifting nature of personal identity through the lens of utilitarian household objects, receiving notice primarily within small, avant-garde screening circuits.
