Where it came from
Futsal Boys!!!!! originated as a mixed-media franchise launched by Bandai Namco Arts, Bandai Namco Entertainment, and diomedéa in 2021. The project aimed to capitalize on the popularity of sports-themed anime by focusing on the fast-paced, high-intensity nature of futsal. This particular short anime series was released in 2022 as a collection of special episodes, designed to supplement the main television broadcast by offering lighter, character-focused vignettes that explore the team dynamics of the various futsal clubs portrayed in the narrative.
The animation for the project was handled by studio diomedéa, known for their work on various character-driven anime series. The design process prioritized vibrant, expressive character aesthetics intended to appeal to fans of idol and team-sports media. While the primary television series received a mixed reception regarding its pacing and sports depiction, these shorts were generally appreciated by the established fanbase as a way to flesh out the personalities of the ensemble cast, providing additional context to the world-building established in the main series.
