Where it came from
Future Folktales, known in Japan as Mirai Mukashibanashi, was produced by Toei Animation and released in 2020 as an educational ONA series. The project was commissioned by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries with the intent of promoting awareness regarding the country's diverse agricultural heritage and regional food cultures to a younger generation.
The series features a clean, modernized aesthetic designed to make traditional Japanese fables and agricultural practices feel accessible to contemporary viewers. By utilizing the ONA format, the production team aimed to reach a wide online audience, blending elements of folklore with themes of sustainability and culinary appreciation, ultimately serving as a bridge between historical customs and the digital age.
