Gall Force: New Era

Gall Force: New Era was released in 1991 as a three-part original video animation series, serving as a direct sequel to the events of the original Gall Force trilogy. Produced by AIC and directed by Katsuhito Akiyama, the project arrived at a time when the studio was heavily invested in expanding the sprawling, multi-generational science fiction epic they had established in the mid-1980s. This installment shifts the focus to a new cast, attempting to refine the complex lore and aesthetic established in earlier entries while transitioning toward the polished visual standards of early nineties animation.

The character designs were handled by Kenichi Sonoda, whose work was instrumental in defining the look of the entire franchise. Sonoda aimed for a balance between the sleek, high-tech weaponry characteristic of eighties sci-fi and a more nuanced approach to character expressions and interpersonal dynamics. Upon its release, New Era was received as a competent addition to the canon that appealed primarily to established fans of the AIC library, though it faced challenges in matching the cultural impact of the original 1986 production, Eternal Story.
