Meet Takuya Seo, an otaku who sits behind the popular gals in class, Ijichi and Amane. Since they're people from different "castes," you wouldn't expect them to have much in common. But when their worlds collide over a borrowed eraser, Takuya slips up about his favorite anime, and Amane...is rather quick to correct him. She says she's not a fan, but her familiarity with the series suggests otherwise. Could she be...a fellow geek?!

Where it came from
Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!? emerged from the 2026 anime season as an adaptation of the popular rom-com manga series. Produced by TMS Entertainment, the series explores the contrasting social worlds of gyaru culture and otaku interests, aiming to subvert common tropes regarding the friction between these two subcultures. The project was conceived as a lighthearted character study focusing on the misunderstandings that occur when disparate social spheres are forced to overlap.
The character design and visual direction for the series were crafted to highlight the vibrant, trend-conscious aesthetics of the lead characters alongside the more muted, detail-oriented style associated with the otaku hobbyist. Upon its release, the series was noted for its polished animation quality and for maintaining a grounded, albeit comedic, approach to the social dynamics it portrayed, finding a receptive audience among viewers who appreciate character-driven narratives.
