The anime follows a boy named Gen, who time travels from the year 2020 to a distant future where humanity has gone extinct. He begins staying at the Ganko family home in the Rustling Forest, where he has none of the amenities he is used to: no electricity, gas, or running water, as well as no television, smartphones, convenience stores, snacks, or games.

Where it came from
Gan Gan Ganko-chan debuted in 2017 as a short-form animated series produced by the studio 10GAUGE. The show serves as a spin-off of the long-running NHK educational puppet series Ganko-chan, which has been a staple of Japanese children's programming for decades. By reimagining the iconic dinosaur protagonist and her prehistoric friends in a stylized, modern animated format, 10GAUGE aimed to reach a younger, digitally-native audience while maintaining the gentle, moral-centric tone of the original broadcast.
The character design remains deeply rooted in the established aesthetic of the Ganko-chan franchise, prioritizing simple, approachable shapes and expressive features that translate well to brief, engaging television segments. The series was designed to be easily consumed in short bursts, reflecting contemporary viewing habits while remaining faithful to the character's legacy. Its reception has been largely defined by its role as a cross-generational bridge, introducing a classic character to new viewers through the polished technical execution of a contemporary studio.
