Where it came from
Ganbatte Ikimasshoi, released in 2024, is an animated feature film produced by Studio MOE. The project serves as a modern adaptation of Yoshiko Shikamura's celebrated 1995 novel, which centers on a group of high school girls striving to establish a competitive rowing team. This production aims to revitalize the source material by grounding the story in the scenic coastal landscape of Matsuyama, emphasizing themes of perseverance and personal growth through the lens of collegiate sport.
The film's visual identity was spearheaded by director Yuhei Sakuragi, who sought to blend traditional character-driven storytelling with contemporary digital animation techniques. The design philosophy focuses on capturing the rhythmic, meditative nature of rowing, aiming for a grounded aesthetic that reflects the emotional weight of adolescence. Upon its release, the film was noted for its commitment to accurately representing the technical nuances of rowing, receiving praise for its atmospheric direction and faithful translation of the original novel's spirit for a new generation.
