Where it came from
Ganbare! Lulu Lolo, also known as Tiny Twin Bears, debuted in 2013 as a Japanese television series produced by Studio Fanworks. The project was conceived as an adaptation of the popular children's picture book series Kuma no Gakko (The Bears' School) by author Hiroyuki Aihara and illustrator Nami Adachi. The series was designed to appeal to younger audiences through its minimalist, gentle aesthetic and relatable short-form narratives centered on the daily lives of the twin bear sisters, Lulu and Lolo.
The production sought to translate the soft, distinctive watercolor-style character designs of the original picture books into a fluid animation format. Under the direction of Hiroyuki Chiba, the series focused on themes of diligence and sisterly cooperation, which resonated with families and educators in Japan. It was well-received for its wholesome tone and consistent visual style, eventually expanding into a recognizable media franchise with significant merchandise and spin-off media beyond its initial broadcast run.
