Gegege no Kitarou: Youkai Daisensou

Released in 1986, Gegege no Kitarou: Youkai Daisensou serves as the second theatrical film based on the third iteration of Shigeru Mizuki’s iconic manga series. Produced by Toei Animation, the film reflects the revitalized interest in the franchise during the mid-1980s, expanding upon the supernatural lore and yokai folkloric roots that Mizuki spent decades popularizing in Japanese culture. It fits into a broader era of Toei’s cinematic output where television series were frequently paired with short, high-energy feature films designed for the seasonal Toei Anime Fair.

The film’s design centers on the signature aesthetic established by the third television series, which modernized Mizuki’s grotesque yet whimsical character designs for a contemporary 1980s audience. The narrative focuses on the titular grand yokai war, pitting Kitarou and his spectral companions against antagonistic forces in a battle of supernatural scale. As part of a beloved legacy, it is regarded by enthusiasts as a classic snapshot of the mid-80s animation style, prioritizing expressive character interactions and the enduring, slightly eerie charm of the original source material.
