Gegege no Kitarou: Youkai Tokkyuu! Maboroshi no Kisha

Released in 1997, Gegege no Kitarou: Youkai Tokkyuu! Maboroshi no Kisha (The Yokai Express! The Phantom Train) was produced by Toei Animation as part of the Toei Anime Fair. This film emerged during a period of sustained popularity for Shigeru Mizuki’s iconic yokai franchise, serving as a cinematic expansion of the fourth television anime series. The story follows Kitarou and his allies as they board a mysterious supernatural train, blending the series' characteristic folklore-infused horror with the high-energy pacing required for a theatrical short film aimed at families.

The production maintains the aesthetic conventions established by the 1990s television adaptation, focusing on a clean, expressive art style that balances Mizuki’s original grotesque designs with a contemporary animation polish. As with many works in the Toei Anime Fair lineup, the film was designed to capture the attention of a young audience while honoring the deep roots of Japanese ghost stories. It was generally well-received by fans of the series, viewed as a charming addition to the franchise’s long history of spin-off media that emphasizes the camaraderie between the yokai protagonists.
