Gegege no Kitarou: Jigoku-hen

Gegege no Kitarou: Jigoku-hen was produced by Toei Animation and aired in 1988 as a specific continuation of the long-running franchise created by manga artist Shigeru Mizuki. Emerging during the late Showa era, this iteration shifted the tone of the series significantly toward a more mature, atmospheric, and unsettling depiction of the Japanese underworld. The series was designed to revisit the darker, more folkloric roots of Mizuki's yokai tales, moving away from the more lighthearted or episodic nature of previous adaptations to focus on the grim geography of the Buddhist-inspired hells.

The visual direction and character designs maintained the quintessential style of Shigeru Mizuki’s original work, emphasizing the grotesque yet empathetic nature of the yokai. By choosing to focus on the 'Jigoku' (Hell) chapter, the production team sought to explore deeper themes of morality and consequence, which resonated with long-time readers of the manga. It remains a notable entry in the franchise for its experimental narrative structure and its willingness to embrace the haunting, philosophical horror that defined the Kitarou mythos.
