While at school, Taniyama Mai and her friends like to exchange ghost stories. Apparently, there is an abandoned school building on their campus that is the center of many ghost stories. During the story, they are interrupted by a mysterious male figure. The person turns out to be Shibuya Kazuya, a 17 year old who is president of the Shibuya Psychic Research Company. He was called by the principal to investigate the stories surrounding the abandoned school building.
The next day, on the way to school, Mai passes the school building in question. While examining a strange camera she spotted inside, she gets surprised by Kazuya's assistant. Unknowingly interfering with the investigation, Mai breaks the camera and Kazuya's assistant gets injured.
Kazuya forcefully hires Mai in order to pay for the camera and replace his injured assistant. From that point on, Mai begins to learn about the paranormal world and the profession of ghost hunting.

Where it came from
Ghost Hunt was produced by the studio J.C.Staff and aired in 2006, based on the light novel series by Fuyumi Ono. The narrative follows Mai Taniyama, a high school student who joins a paranormal research team led by Kazuya Shibuya, a stoic teenager known as Naru. The series emerged during a period of rising interest in supernatural mystery anime, drawing heavily from Ono’s background in building intricate, suspenseful plots that balance classic ghost stories with psychological tension.
The character designs for the anime were handled by Masahiro Aizawa, who aimed to preserve the grounded, slightly gothic aesthetic established in the original source material. By focusing on investigative logic rather than pure action, the production sought to create a distinct, atmospheric experience for viewers. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its slow-burn pacing and commitment to traditional Japanese and Western horror tropes, eventually becoming a cult classic within the mystery genre.
