Synopsis

After an explosion at an archaeological excavation research facility in the Middle East, the world is changed in unthinkable ways. The sky is suddenly a mirror, electronic devices mysteriously no longer work properly, and children who are born after this point seem to have strange, metaphysical powers. Society is but a shell of its former self, and in the midst of the clandestine forces that brought about this eerie apocalypse is an elite group of young, powerful mutants who are working to restore the world under the direction of a woman known only as The Countess.

The story centers on a brother and sister, Tatsuya and Kiyoko, the children of a scientist at the Twin X facility.

Provenance

Where it came from

Gilgamesh was produced by Group TAC and premiered in 2003, serving as a loose adaptation of the ancient Epic of Gilgamesh. The series recontextualized the source material within a post-apocalyptic science fiction setting, focusing on a world altered by a mysterious phenomenon known as 'Heaven's Gate.' It emerged during a period of experimentation in the anime industry, where classic literary or mythological foundations were frequently reimagined through dark, psychological, and futuristic lenses.

The series was directed by Masahiko Murata, with character designs by Yoshitaka Amano. Amano, world-renowned for his ethereal and distinctive artistic style, brought a sense of melancholic grandeur to the project that separated it from more conventional animation of the era. While the production is remembered by enthusiasts for its unique atmosphere and visual identity, its reception was tempered by its slow-paced, enigmatic narrative style, which challenged viewers expecting a more traditional action-oriented structure.
