Where it came from
Released in 2000, Ginga Tetsudou 999: Glass no Clair, also known as Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Traveller Emeraldas, was produced by Toei Animation as a short feature to celebrate the enduring legacy of Leiji Matsumoto’s science fiction franchise. The film serves as a side story focusing on the tragic character Claire, a woman who sacrificed her human body to become a living glass construct, exploring themes of identity and sacrifice that defined the melancholic tone of the original series.
This production is notable for its early experimentation with 3D computer-generated imagery in the context of classic anime aesthetics. The direction aimed to blend traditional cel-style character designs with modernized, depth-enhanced backgrounds to reflect the ethereal nature of the protagonist. While it was received primarily as a niche curiosity for long-time fans of the 1970s saga, it remains a significant touchstone for how classic space opera motifs were adapted for the turn of the millennium.
