Girlfriend, Girlfriend

Girlfriend, Girlfriend, or Kanojo mo Kanojo, began as a manga series by Hiroyuki before being adapted into a 12-episode anime series by Tezuka Productions in 2021. The series leans into the tropes of the romantic comedy genre by focusing on a protagonist who attempts to manage relationships with two girlfriends simultaneously after one confesses to him. This premise serves as a satirical take on the traditional harem anime archetype, intentionally pushing the absurdity of the genre to its logical extreme.

The animation studio, Tezuka Productions, aimed to capture the energetic and often chaotic tone of Hiroyuki’s original illustrations. The character designs focus on exaggerated expressions and high-contrast visuals to match the frantic pace of the narrative. Upon its release, the series was received primarily as a tongue-in-cheek comedy, with critics noting that its success relied on the audience's familiarity with established anime conventions and their willingness to embrace the show's deliberate lack of realism.
