Girlfriend (♪)

Girlfriend is a short-form original net animation released in 2016 by Encourage Films. It was produced as a visual accompaniment for the song of the same name by the Japanese musical project i-dep, led by producer Nakamura Hiroshi. The project sought to blend modern electronic pop aesthetics with a distinct, minimalist animation style, functioning as a music video that functions as a standalone piece of digital storytelling.

The animation was designed to capture a whimsical and romantic atmosphere, relying on clean lines and a vibrant color palette typical of the studio's smaller-scale experimental projects. By focusing on fluid movement and rhythmic syncopation, the creators aimed to evoke a sense of fleeting connection. It was received primarily within the niche community of J-pop music video enthusiasts and fans of independent Japanese animation, where it remains a representative example of mid-2010s digital-first visual art.
