Where it came from
Girl Friend BETA was produced by the animation studio SILVER LINK. and premiered in 2014. It is based on a popular Japanese mobile social card game originally released by CyberAgent in 2012. The anime adaptation was developed to capitalize on the success of the original game, which invited players to interact with a vast roster of female characters, each represented by collectible digital cards.
The production sought to translate the game's episodic, character-focused premise into a narrative format. Design-wise, it emphasizes the bright, aesthetic styles typical of the slice-of-life school genre of the era. While the game enjoyed significant commercial traction in Japan, the anime series received a mixed reception, noted primarily by fans of the source material for its efforts to weave together the disparate character storylines into a cohesive television format.
