Where it came from
The 2022 Girls' Frontline television series was produced by Asahi Production to adapt the popular mobile strategy role-playing game developed by MICA Team. The series was designed to translate the game's complex lore, which centers on sentient androids known as Tactical Dolls who combat a post-apocalyptic threat, into a narrative format. The production aimed to expand the franchise's reach to broader anime audiences, though it focused primarily on the foundational conflict established in the game's early chapters.
The animation was directed by Shigeru Ueda, with the studio striving to replicate the tactical military aesthetic and character designs characteristic of the source material's key visual art. Upon its release, the series received mixed reception from the existing fan base and general viewers, with much of the discussion centering on the challenges of adapting a non-linear, resource-management-heavy game narrative into a twelve-episode television structure.
