Where it came from
Girl's High, known in Japan as Joshikōsei, is a 2006 television anime series produced by the studio ARMS. The series is based on the manga by Towa Oshima, which was serialized in Futabasha's Action Pizazz magazine. It emerged during a period in the mid-2000s when studio ARMS was focusing on adapting seinen-targeted manga into anime series, often prioritizing a balance between comedic slice-of-life elements and distinctive character-driven storytelling.
The character designs were handled by Junji Goto, who sought to translate Oshima's stylized, somewhat crude manga aesthetic into a fluid animation format. The series focuses on the daily, often irreverent lives of three high school girls, eschewing traditional plot-heavy tropes in favor of episodic, dialogue-heavy humor. Upon its release, it was noted for its unconventional art style and unapologetic approach to adolescent humor, establishing a niche but dedicated following among fans of late-night comedic anime.
