When the Ministry of Education goes back on its promise to keep Ooarai Girls Academy open, the task of saving the five-mile-long Academy Ship from the wreckers falls to Miho and her barely-seasoned tankery team. However, things go off track almost immediately. While the Oorai tank crew may have won the high school tournament, they’re now facing a larger and more experienced university team, and if they fail, their armored vehicles will be forfeit! Will they be swapping their tanks for the memories? It’s possible, but winning a tank battle is all about tactics and teamwork, and the fledgling Ooarai students have more friends and allies than anyone suspects.

Where it came from
Girls und Panzer der Film was released in 2015 as a cinematic expansion of the popular multimedia franchise created by Actas. Directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, the film serves as a direct follow-up to the television series, which famously blends the unlikely aesthetic of competitive high school sports with the tactical operation of World War II-era tanks. The production was conceived to raise the stakes of the series, moving the narrative from routine matches to a desperate effort to save the Oarai Girls Academy from closure through high-stakes exhibition tankery.
The film was widely praised for its technical animation, particularly in its depiction of tank physics and complex choreography during large-scale battle sequences. The production team utilized a combination of traditional animation and 3D computer graphics to capture the weight and mechanical detail of the vehicles, a hallmark of the series' design philosophy. Upon its release, it became a significant success within the niche market of military-themed anime, sustaining a dedicated following through its immersive sound design and detailed references to historical armored warfare.
