Where it came from
Gloria was released as an original video animation in 1997 by SoftCel Pictures, a division of the American adult animation distributor Central Park Media. During the 1990s, SoftCel was well-known for its niche localization efforts, specifically focusing on the English-language dubbing and distribution of adult-oriented Japanese animation for the burgeoning home video market in the West.
The title reflects the aesthetic and narrative trends of the era's adult OVA market, which frequently leaned into supernatural or dark fantasy themes to distinguish itself from mainstream animation. Like many titles under the SoftCel label, the production prioritized quick turnaround and accessibility for the direct-to-video rental market, serving a specific audience interested in the cross-cultural exchange of animation styles during the late 20th century.
