Synopsis

The protagonist, Mikako Kouda, is a student of "Yaza Gaku." Specialising in fashion design, Mikako dreams of becoming a fashion designer with her own brand. Living next to her is her childhood friend, Tsutomu Yamaguchi. Even though they have been close since they were young, they share a platonic friendship. However, Tsutomu has been gaining popularity, especially with the girls, because he seems to resemble a popular vocalist from a band and somehow, Mikako begins to see him in a different light.

This is a story about how youths cope with dreams, love and friendship.

Provenance

Where it came from

Gokinjo Monogatari, or Neighborhood Story, was produced by Toei Animation and debuted in 1995 as an adaptation of Ai Yazawa’s popular manga series. The story centers on Mikako Kouda, an aspiring fashion designer attending a vocational high school, and her childhood friend Tsutomu Yamaguchi. The series is widely recognized for its contribution to the josei and shoujo genres, reflecting the mid-nineties Tokyo art school culture and a distinct shift toward more mature, character-driven narratives focused on creative identity and personal ambition.

The visual direction and character designs were heavily influenced by Ai Yazawa’s unique aesthetic, which prioritized bold, avant-garde fashion and expressive, stylized character silhouettes. The animation team sought to translate the manga’s intricate, hand-drawn textures and colorful street-style outfits into a television format. Upon its release, the series garnered a dedicated following for its authentic portrayal of the transition from adolescence to young adulthood, and it remains a hallmark of the experimental visual style that defined much of Toei's mid-nineties output.
