Where it came from
Gokurou-san is a mascot character associated with the Japanese public broadcaster NHK, specifically serving as a representative of the station's efforts to promote courteous and mindful communication. The character was developed as part of a campaign to foster a polite working environment and encourage gratitude in daily interactions, fitting into a long tradition of Japanese corporate and institutional mascots designed to soften the image of large organizations.
The design of Gokurou-san is minimalist and functional, prioritizing clarity and a friendly appearance to appeal to a broad demographic of viewers. Its name is derived from 'gokurou-sama,' a common Japanese phrase used to express appreciation for someone’s hard work. While the character is not a commercial product in the traditional sense, it remains a recognized symbol within the NHK ecosystem, representing the broadcaster's commitment to public service and social harmony.
