In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.

Where it came from
Golden Kamuy began as a celebrated manga series by Satoru Noda before being adapted into this television series by Geno Studio in 2018. The narrative is set in the harsh wilderness of Hokkaido following the Russo-Japanese War, centering on a quest for a hidden fortune of Ainu gold. The production team aimed to balance intense historical realism with the series' signature eccentric humor, meticulous research into Ainu culture, and high-stakes survival action.
The adaptation was directed by Hitoshi Nanba, who worked to translate Noda’s intricate character dynamics and detailed regional landscapes into animation. Upon its debut, the series gained recognition for its unconventional tone and deep focus on the cultural complexities of early 20th-century Japan. It has since become a notable entry in the historical adventure genre, praised for its commitment to its source material's blend of grit and oddity.
