GOLDEN BOY

Golden Boy was released in 1995 as a six-part original video animation (OVA) series produced by Studio KSS. Adapted from the manga by Tatsuya Egawa, the story follows Kintaro Oe, a nomadic genius who travels across Japan on his bicycle, seeking work and life lessons. The production emerged during a period when the OVA format allowed for higher production values and more mature, experimental storytelling compared to standard television anime, helping the series gain a reputation for its blend of slapstick comedy, ecchi elements, and surprisingly earnest character growth.

The series was directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo, who focused on dynamic animation sequences to capture the high-energy and often surreal nature of Kintaro's encounters. The character design sought to emphasize both the comedic expressions and the expressive fluidity of the protagonist, which contributed to the show's distinct visual identity. Upon its release, Golden Boy became a cult favorite, particularly in international markets, where its fast-paced humor and unconventional protagonist resonated with audiences who appreciated its bold and irreverent take on the 90s anime landscape.
