Where it came from
Goodbye, Don Glees! was released in 2022 as an original anime feature film produced by the renowned studio Madhouse. Directed and written by Atsuko Ishizuka, the story serves as a coming-of-age narrative centered on three boys who form a self-styled adventure group known as the Don Glees. The film emerged from Ishizuka’s desire to explore the transient, bittersweet nature of adolescence, specifically targeting the emotional transition between childhood and young adulthood.
The film's visual design is characterized by its vibrant, expansive portrayal of the Japanese countryside, which contrasts with the intimate, internal struggles of the protagonists. Ishizuka collaborated with character designer Takahiro Yoshimatsu to create a distinct, grounded aesthetic that avoids typical genre tropes, focusing instead on the psychological landscape of the main characters. Upon its release, the film was received as a contemplative and visually striking entry in the contemporary anime film canon, praised for its focus on friendship and the inevitability of change.
