Long, long ago, there lived a mermaid princess named Lara. She was raised with love by her father, the king of the sea kingdom, and her older sisters.
One day, Lara fell in love with a human prince who lived on land. It was a forbidden love, one that was not allowed in the world of mermaids. Still, Lara journeyed to the surface. With a potion, given to her from the witch Grace, she became human. But the potion came at a cost: fail to find true love, she would turn into foam. Though she was a princess of the sea, Lara chose love. Yet, her wish went unfulfilled and perished into the sea.
Two hundred years later, Lara awakens once more in Lake Biwa to finally search for her true love.
All because of "love".

Where it came from
Goodbye, Lara emerged from Kinema Citrus in 2026 as a notable entry in the studio's portfolio, reflecting their characteristic focus on character-driven narratives and atmospheric animation. Developed during a period of experimentation within the studio's creative pipeline, the series was designed to explore themes of transience and connection, marking a departure from their previous high-fantasy works toward a more intimate, grounded aesthetic.
The visual direction and character design were crafted to emphasize expressive, understated movement, prioritizing emotional resonance over complex action sequences. Upon its release, the series received attention for its specific art style, which utilized a muted color palette to reinforce its melancholic tone. Critical reception focused primarily on the pacing of the narrative and the effectiveness of its minimalist approach to storytelling.
