Where it came from
Good-by Elvis and USA is a 1977 documentary film directed by Danny Lyon. Emerging from the New Journalism era of the 1970s, the work captures the cultural landscape surrounding the death of Elvis Presley. Lyon, a renowned photographer and filmmaker associated with the New Journalism movement, utilized his characteristic observational style to document the public mourning and the broader American atmosphere at that pivotal cultural moment.
The film is noted for its raw, unfiltered approach to documentary filmmaking, eschewing traditional narrative structures in favor of an intimate, often stark portrayal of subjects and their environments. Lyon's aesthetic sought to bridge the gap between fine art photography and social documentary, focusing on the vernacular of American life. It was received as a significant personal project for Lyon, reflecting his distinct interest in subcultures and the changing tides of American identity.
