Kitarou is a youkai boy born in a cemetery, and aside from his mostly-decayed father, the last living member of the Ghost tribe. He is missing his left eye, but his hair usually covers the empty socket. He fights for peace between humans and youkai, which generally involves protecting the former from the wiles of the latter.
This version of the Kitarou story is based on the original Hakaba Kitarou manga, the manga which inspired the popular Gegege no Kitarou series in the late 60's.

Where it came from
The 2008 production of Hakaba Kitaro, or Graveyard Kitaro, was released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki’s original manga series. Unlike the more family-friendly iterations of GeGeGe no Kitaro that aired throughout the decades, this series was specifically designed to adapt the darker, grittier aesthetic of the earliest manga chapters from the late 1950s and early 1960s, returning to the series' roots in folklore and the macabre.
Produced by Toei Animation, the series utilized an art style that intentionally mimicked the visual texture and haunting atmosphere of Mizuki’s original ink drawings. Directed by Kimitoshi Chioka, the project sought to provide a mature, faithful interpretation for long-time fans and historians of the medium, and it was widely praised by critics for its bold refusal to sanitize the source material, effectively bridging the gap between historical manga legacy and modern television animation.
