Where it came from
Gravity, released as a vertical video experience, represents an innovative experiment in digital media consumption. Developed to adapt the cinematic scope of Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 space thriller for the constraints and intimacy of mobile device orientations, the project sought to explore how spatial immersion could be maintained when stripping away the traditional landscape frame. It arrived at a moment when streaming platforms were beginning to experiment with mobile-first formats, challenging the established conventions of cinematography.
The design process focused on reframing the intense, isolated movements of Dr. Ryan Stone as she navigates debris in orbit. By shifting the aspect ratio to a vertical plane, the creators aimed to emphasize the vastness of the void above and below the protagonist, replacing the horizontal sweep of theater screens with a singular, claustrophobic axis. While it garnered attention as a technical curiosity within the industry, critics noted that such adaptations serve more as a commentary on shifting viewing habits than a replacement for the intended cinematic experience.
