Where it came from
Great Dangaioh, released in 2001, serves as a successor to the 1987 original series Dangaioh. Produced by AIC and directed by Toshiki Hirano, the series was designed to revisit the mecha-action genre with updated animation techniques and a more complex narrative structure. The project aimed to balance the aesthetic nostalgia of 1980s super robot shows with the more cynical and character-driven storytelling prevalent in the turn-of-the-millennium anime industry.
The series received a mixed reception from critics and fans who had nostalgic attachments to the original OVA. While the production quality reflected the technical advancements AIC had made over the preceding decade, the shift in tone and the episodic nature of the narrative led to debates regarding its place in the broader mecha canon. It remains a notable, if divisive, entry in AIC's historical catalog of original robot animation.
