Where it came from
Gravity Rush: The Animation - Overture was produced by Studio Khara in 2016 to bridge the narrative gap between the original Gravity Rush game and its sequel, Gravity Rush 2. Directed by Hiroyasu Kobayashi, the short film was conceived as a promotional tool to reintroduce players to the atmospheric, gravity-defying world of Hekseville and the protagonist, Kat, ahead of the second game's release.
The animation reflects the distinct visual style of the series, utilizing a blend of 2D character designs that mirror the games' artistic aesthetic with 3D environmental modeling. Studio Khara, famous for their work on the Rebuild of Evangelion films, brought a dynamic, fluid quality to the gravity-shifting action sequences. It was generally well-received by fans of the franchise for successfully maintaining the series' whimsical yet melancholic tone while clarifying the plot transition for newcomers and returning players alike.
