Where it came from
Great Pretender was produced by Wit Studio and released internationally in 2020 as a Netflix original anime. Directed by Hiro Kaburagi with character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the series was conceived as a high-stakes, globetrotting heist caper. The production team aimed to blend a vibrant, sun-drenched aesthetic with complex, character-driven narratives, drawing stylistic inspiration from classic caper films and the work of Hayao Miyazaki in its expansive, colorful backgrounds.
The series received significant critical acclaim upon release, particularly for its unique artistic direction and fast-paced, multi-layered plot structure. Reviewers noted that the show's departure from traditional anime tropes, combined with its distinctively stylized art style and upbeat jazz-infused soundtrack, helped it stand out in a crowded streaming landscape. It remains regarded as a standout modern original series within the Wit Studio catalog for its polished visual identity and cynical yet empathetic exploration of deception.
