Greed

Greed was released in 1985 as an early example of the original video animation format, produced by Pony Canyon during a period of rapid experimentation within the Japanese animation industry. This title emerged during the mid-1980s boom, when studios began bypassing traditional television broadcasting to distribute self-contained stories directly to home video markets, allowing for more niche or experimental subject matter that did not necessarily require the broad commercial appeal needed for network programming.

The creative direction behind this project reflected the era's fascination with stylized, gritty aesthetics and concise storytelling. As a production under the Pony Canyon umbrella, the piece is characteristic of the experimental tone favored by studios at the time, which often prioritized distinctive visual flair and atmosphere over long-form narrative structure. While it remains a deep-cut title within the medium's extensive history, it serves as a representative artifact of the creative autonomy afforded to animators during the height of the OVA golden age.
