Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl: The Nighttime Sun

Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl: The Nighttime Sun was produced in 2012 as an original video animation, serving as an extension of the 2011 television anime series adapted from Hitoma Iruma's light novel light novel series. The animation was helmed by Studio Shaft, a production house renowned for its distinct, experimental visual language. This release was designed to provide a supplemental narrative bridge for fans of the original series, maintaining the show's signature focus on the eccentric, slice-of-life interactions between the protagonist, Niwa Makoto, and his cousin, Erio Touwa.

The production leans heavily into the stylistic trademarks associated with director Akiyuki Shinbo and Studio Shaft, including sharp cuts, unconventional color palettes, and heavy emphasis on environmental framing. Like the preceding series, the OVA aimed to balance the whimsical, pseudo-science-fiction elements of the plot with character-driven drama. While the series enjoyed a niche but loyal following during its airing, this specific OVA was received as a stylistic continuation that prioritizes the established aesthetic and atmospheric tone of the Shaft production team.
