Where it came from
Growing Up With Hello Kitty, produced by Sanrio in 1994, serves as an educational and character-driven animation series designed to teach young viewers essential social and emotional lessons. Released during a period when Sanrio was heavily expanding its media footprint to move beyond static character goods, the series aimed to embed the Hello Kitty brand deeper into the daily routines of children by modeling positive behavior and character development.
The animation style draws heavily from the minimalist, soft aesthetic established by Sanrio in the 1970s, prioritizing clarity and warmth to appeal to a preschool demographic. While the series was received primarily as a commercial tool for brand loyalty, it was also recognized for its gentle storytelling approach, which moved away from the intense conflict common in other children’s programming of the era, focusing instead on relatable milestones like sharing, friendship, and early childhood curiosity.
