Where it came from
Gu Long Qian Xia Zhuan was produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures as a 2017 ONA series intended to showcase the potential of high-quality Chinese 3D animation. The project was conceived as an anthology-style tribute to the wuxia literary legacy of the legendary novelist Gu Long, seeking to translate his fast-paced, atmospheric storytelling into a visual medium that could appeal to modern domestic audiences.
The series design sought to balance traditional wuxia aesthetics with contemporary CGI character modeling. By focusing on stylistic swordplay and the philosophical undertones characteristic of Gu Long's work, the studio aimed to push the technical boundaries of Tencent's animation pipeline at the time. Upon its release, it was noted primarily for its technical ambition and its attempt to synthesize classic martial arts fiction with the growing trend of serialized digital animation in China.
