Gulliver's Travels: Beyond the Moon

Released by Toei Animation in 1965, Gulliver's Travels: Beyond the Moon represents a significant moment in the studio’s early history as they attempted to expand their reach into international markets. The film serves as a loose, futuristic adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s classic literary work, reimagining the protagonist's adventures within the context of the space race era. By transplanting the narrative to space, Toei aimed to capture the widespread public fascination with science fiction and planetary exploration prevalent during the mid-sixties.

The production design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of Japanese animation during the transition period from traditional theatrical shorts to full-length features. The film is notable for featuring a young Hayao Miyazaki, who worked as an in-between animator on the project. While it received a modest reception at the time of its release, the film remains an intriguing case study in how 18th-century literature was reinterpreted through the lens of post-war Japanese technological optimism and the evolving visual style of the Toei studio.
