Guaren Wu Ji

Guaren Wu Ji, or The Legend of the Melon People, was released by the independent Chinese animation studio Wonder Cat Animation. Created during a period of burgeoning creativity in China's digital animation sector, the series was designed to blend traditional Chinese cultural motifs with a distinct, minimalist aesthetic. The production sought to explore folklore through a modern, stylized lens, distinguishing itself from the prevailing mainstream aesthetics of the time.

The character design and visual direction for the series are credited to the core creative team at Wonder Cat Animation. Their approach prioritized fluid movement and an evocative color palette intended to evoke a dreamlike quality. Upon its release in the ONA (Original Net Animation) format, the series was well-received by domestic audiences and digital art communities for its experimental storytelling and atmospheric, often surreal approach to narrative structure.
