Where it came from
Gugong Li De Da Guaishou, or 'The Forbidden City's Great Mythical Beasts,' emerged as a creative collaboration aimed at introducing younger generations to the rich cultural heritage of the Palace Museum in Beijing. Produced by Original Force, the series sought to blend modern animation techniques with traditional folklore, reinterpreting the iconic stone statues and architectural decorations of the Forbidden City as whimsical, relatable characters that guide viewers through historical narratives.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to balance educational intent with the visual language of contemporary ONA productions. By personifying the mythical stone beasts, the creative team aimed to make the dense history of the Forbidden City accessible and engaging. Upon its release, the series was generally well-received for its polished aesthetics and its successful attempt to revitalize institutional history for a digital-first audience.
