Where it came from
Gudetama, the lethargic egg character, was created by the designer Amy for Sanrio in 2014. The character emerged from a company-wide contest aimed at developing new food-themed mascots, where the concept of a personified egg lacking motivation resonated with a public looking for more relatable, weary icons compared to the traditionally upbeat Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty.
The character's aesthetic is defined by its simple, minimalist lines and signature expression of exhaustion, which quickly transitioned from digital stickers to a series of short, surreal television vignettes. These animations, which depict Gudetama’s various failed attempts to avoid life’s pressures, gained widespread cultural recognition for capturing a spirit of existential burnout that appealed to both children and adults globally.
