The girls of the Social Welfare Agency are no ordinary children. They are the grisly remains of human wreckage pieced back together with cybernetic implants and trained to kill by the government.
The oldest, Triela, pursues her targets with a ferocious enthusiasm, unwilling to settle for less than total annihilation. Her mirror in this bloody stalemate is Pinocchio, a shell of a boy raised as an assassin by the FRF: a terrorist faction at war with the SWA. Cold and cruelly efficient, he wields sharpened steel as though it were an extension of his own hand.
Once human, these shattered souls have become murderous machines with only vague recollections of what it meant to be real — and a brutal compulsion to be the last killer standing.

Where it came from
Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino- was released in 2008 as the second anime adaptation of Yu Aida's manga series. Produced by Studio Artland under the direction of Teiichi Takiguchi, the series was created to continue the narrative threads established in the 2003 Madhouse production, aiming to bring a more faithful adherence to the source material's darker, more melancholy tone regarding the Social Welfare Agency's tragic cyborg operatives.
The visual design shifted significantly from the first series, opting for a different character aesthetic and a more muted color palette that emphasized the bleak atmosphere of the story. While the series was received with polarized opinions due to the departure in art style from its predecessor, it is regarded as a significant entry in the genre for its unflinching exploration of its characters' psychological burden and the moral ambiguity of their handlers.
